Walk through Bariyarpur village on a weekday afternoon and you'll notice something missing: men between the ages of 20 and 45. Most are in Surat, Delhi or Bengaluru, working construction and factory jobs, sending money home every month.
"My husband comes home twice a year, for ten days each time," said Sunita Devi, whose family has relied on remittances for six years. "The children barely know him."
Local panchayat records estimate over 60 percent of working-age men from the village currently live outside the state.
